Could you have prediabetes? Take this test to find out!

What is prediabetes?
Prediabetes is the condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diabetes. People with prediabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Prediabetes in Maryland 
In Maryland, 1.6 million adults are estimated to have prediabetes. Only about 408,000, or 10.5% are aware that they have prediabetes. People at risk for type 2 diabetes can prevent or delay the disease by making modest lifestyle changes that include weight loss and physical activity. In Maryland people with prediabetes can take a Diabetes Prevention Program class.
 

Am I at risk for prediabetes?

Most don’t know it. Are you at risk? Take the test to find out.

You may have prediabetes and be at risk for type 2 diabetes if you:

  • Are overweight
  • Have a family history of type 2 diabetes
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Are physically active fewer than three times per week
  • Ever had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes) or gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds

Diabetes Prevention Program

The National Diabetes Prevention Program is a lifestyle change program where you will learn, share, and try new things, all while developing new habits and improving your health.

Classes are led by a trained lifestyle coach who will help you learn new skills and help you set and meet goals.

You will be learning with a group of people with goals and challenges that are similar to yours.
People who take the classes learn real changes such as healthier eating, adding physical activity into their daily lives, and improving problem-solving skills. Classes meet weekly for 16 weeks, then less often for the rest of the year.
 
A year sounds like a long time, but making lifestyle changes is an ongoing process. Your coach and fellow classmates can help you succeed – and you can help them!
 
This program can help people lower their risk of getting type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for people over age 60!). The goal of the program is for participants to lose 5-7% of their body weight (about 8-12 pounds for someone weighing 175 pounds) and do 150 minutes of physical activity a week.
