Tobacco Impacts Oral Health

All tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco, are harmful to your oral health.  Possible impacts not only include gum disease and oral cancer, but also stained teeth and tongue, dulled sense of taste and smell, slower healing after after a tooth extraction or other surgery, and difficulties in correcting cosmetic dental problems.  Quitting tobacco use is the only way to decrease your risk of these and other tobacco-related health problems. The addictive quality of nicotine, which is found in all tobacco products, can make this especially difficult.  That’s why it’s important to have a quit plan and support.  The Maryland Tobacco Quitline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669), provides FREE help in quitting. The Quitline is provided by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and offers effective evidenced based counseling to assist Marylanders ages 13 years and older in quitting tobacco use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.   For more information and to enroll in the program visit www.SmokingStopsHere.com.
